Established in 2016, the IEEE Broadcast Technology Society and the Association of Federal Communications Consulting Engineers (AFCCE) award scholarships of up to $10,000 to promising undergraduate and graduate students at accredited U.S. universities who are pursuing a career in broadcast engineering. The scholarship honors Jules Cohen, an IEEE Fellow, long-time AFCCE member, and past AFCCE President.

Frequency:
Awarded twice annually, aligned with the Spring and Fall academic semesters.

Prize:

  • Scholarship amounts of $5,000 or $10,000 per award, based on qualifications, financial need, and availability of funds.
  • Minimum of one undergraduate and one graduate award per semester (subject to availability).
  • Maximum of eight undergraduate and five graduate scholarships per semester.
  • Undergraduate awards: $500–$15,000 per semester, not exceeding $15,000 annually.
  • Graduate awards: $1,000–$15,000 per semester, not exceeding $15,000 annually.

Funding:
Funded by IEEE BTS society funds, with a maximum total of $40,000 available annually.

Eligibility:

  • Full-time enrollment in an engineering program at an accredited U.S. university
  • Undergraduate students must have Junior or Senior standing
  • Good academic record
  • Clear interest in a career in broadcast engineering
  • Completion of scholarship application, including academic transcripts and personal statement

Basis for Judging:

  • Expression of interest in broadcast engineering (personal statement)
  • Academic achievement
  • Financial need
  • Relevant extracurricular activities
  • Recommendations by the AFCCE Scholarship Fund Scholarship Committee, with final decisions by the AFCCE Scholarship Fund Board of Directors

Presentation:

  • Scholarship awards are sent directly to the recipient’s university for disbursement
  • Awardees are notified by letter
