Established in 2015, the IEEE Jules Cohen Award honors a broadcast engineer who has demonstrated exceptional technical contributions to the field and a commitment to sharing knowledge with colleagues and young professionals. The award recognizes both technical excellence and mentorship within the industry.
Frequency:
Presented annually to one deserving recipient.
Prize:
- Plaque
- $1,000 award
- Complimentary registration to all future IEEE Broadcast Symposiums
Funding:
Funded by the IEEE Broadcast Technology Society. An award will only be presented if a suitable candidate is identified and the Societyâs budget is net positive, including the cost of the prize.
Eligibility:
- Demonstrated outstanding achievement and contributions to broadcast engineering (see Basis for Judging below).
- Cannot be a member of the IEEE BTS Awards Committee.
- Must comply with IEEE and Society policies, including IEEE Policy 4.4 on Awards Limitations.
- Previous award winners are not eligible for recognition for the same achievements, unless the contributionâs significance warrants a higher award in a subsequent year.
Basis for Judging:
- Nominees will be evaluated based on:
- Significant technical achievements as an inventor, developer, or implementer.
- Willingness to share expertise and mentor others, demonstrated through activities such as publishing peer-reviewed papers, delivering lectures, participating in the BTS Distinguished Lecturer Program, or mentoring students and professionals.

- Commitment to the success of clients, colleagues, and the industry.
- Active participation in IEEE BTS and/or other media technology organizations.
Presentation:
Preferably awarded at the IEEE BTS Annual Broadcast Symposium. If necessary, it may be presented at other BTS events (e.g., AdCom meetings) or remotely via audio/visual connection.

Established in 1993, the Clyde M. Hunt Memorial Graduate Award recognizes outstanding original work by a graduate student that represents a significant contribution to the field of broadcast engineering. The award highlights technical excellence and innovation in research or development.
Frequency:
Presented annually to one or more deserving recipients, provided suitable candidates are nominated.
Prizes:
- First Prize: $1,000 USD, certificate, and an all-expense-paid trip to the IEEE Annual Broadcast Symposium, including complimentary registration to present their work.
- Second Prize: $500 USD, certificate, and complimentary registration to the Annual Broadcast Symposium.
- Third Prize: $250 USD, certificate, and complimentary registration to the Annual Broadcast Symposium.
- All Winners: One-year complimentary student IEEE membership.
Funding:
Honoraria funded by the Clyde M. Hunt Memorial Fund, administered by the IEEE Foundation. Travel and symposium registration funded by the IEEE Broadcast Technology Society.
Eligibility:
- Nominees must be graduate students pursuing a course of study in a field related to broadcast engineering.
- Students need not be IEEE or IEEE BTS members.
- Nominees must demonstrate significant contributions to original work in broadcast engineering.
- Awarded annually if a suitable candidate is nominated.
Basis for Judging:
- Quality and originality of the work.
- Significance of the contribution to the broadcast engineering profession.
Timeliness and relevance of the research or project.
Presentation:
Awarded at the IEEE Annual Broadcast Symposium. Winners are expected to present their work at the symposium.

Established in 1957, the Scott Helt Memorial Award recognizes the author(s) of the most outstanding paper published in the IEEE Transactions on Broadcasting. The award honors exceptional contributions to broadcasting research and technical excellence in the field.
Frequency:
Presented annually to the principal (first-named) author of the most outstanding paper, with recognition for all co-authors.
Prize:
- $1,000 USD and a plaque for the principal (first-named) author
- Complimentary registration to an IEEE Broadcast Technology Societyâsponsored BMSB Symposium for the principal author
- Certificates for all additional authors
Funding:
Funded by the IEEE Broadcast Technology Society.
Eligibility:
Authors of papers published in the IEEE Transactions on Broadcasting during the previous calendar year (January 1 â December 31) prior to the fall Broadcast Symposium.
Basis for Judging:
- Overall quality and clarity of the paper
- Originality and timeliness of the subject matter
- Contribution and impact on the broadcasting field

Established in 1982, the Matti S. Siukola Memorial Award recognizes the best paper presented at the IEEE Annual Broadcast Symposium. The award honors Dr. Matti S. Siukola, a distinguished broadcast antenna engineer for over thirty years, who tragically passed away completing his presentation at the 1980 IEEE Broadcast Symposium.
Frequency:
Presented annually to the paper judged the most outstanding by symposium attendees.
Prize:
- $1,000 cash award to the winning presenter
- Certificate of recognition
Funding:
Funded by the IEEE Broadcast Technology Society.
Eligibility:
- Any presenter at the IEEE Annual Broadcast Symposium is automatically eligible.

Established in 2009, the IEEE Broadband Multimedia Symposium (BMS) Best Paper Award recognizes the most outstanding papers presented at the Annual IEEE International Symposium on Broadband Multimedia Systems and Broadcasting. Submissions are evaluated on technical content, originality, presentation quality, and the effectiveness of supporting materials.
